Tumblewood Community School is a small independent special school, currently rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted (Dec 2015), which provides specialist interventions and education for girls and young women who have a range of needs and require additional support. Our students have a history of multiple placement breakdowns and have therefore developed adaptive survival patterns of behaviour, which are often socially unacceptable. Our aim at Tumblewood is to look at the individual child and develop a programme which suits their needs. We currently provide education to both residential and day pupils with current spaces available within the day programme.
We carefully assess the individual needs of our students, which enables us to provide them with a well-structured educational programme and this helps them to succeed and enjoy learning.
Tumblewood Community School prides itself on providing a holistic approach to education by preparing students for all the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. Through this supportive environment, students can begin to develop self-respect and self-confidence, which is a vital step towards social inclusion. We strive for all pupils to achieve and succeed and attempt to make this as easy as possible.
Tumblewood has a small school on the premises which offers a variety of subjects. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum which meets the needs of all of our pupils. We attempt to cater to all young people’s interests and wishes by regularly adapting and refreshing our timetable. We currently offer English, Maths, Science, ICT, Humanities, Art, DT, Food technology, PSHE, Life Skills and PE lessons. We also give every pupil the opportunity to have 1:1 music lessons learning a variety of instruments. Due to the small size of the school we can be very flexible with the timetable and are able to offer other things such as weekly work experience places and off-site education for vocational courses such as hair and beauty and sport.
Each school day at Tumblewood is much like mainstream education. It begins at 9.00* am and the lessons are 35 to 40 minutes long. The usual morning and afternoon breaks are timetabled in and lunch is at 12.15* [*These time may change]
All of the class sizes at Tumblewood have a maximum of 5 pupils and each lesson has both a teacher and a TA so there is lots of support to help students achieve. We have a mix of residential and day pupils but all pupils work together.
We offer a range of qualifications including GCSE’s, Functional Skills qualifications and Entry Level qualifications. We aim to get students as many qualifications as possible in a short period of time so that they are set up for future. If a student has something specific that they would like to study, we will try our best to make it happen.
Students have an opportunity to earn 14 points a day by completing set work and by being polite and respectful. Once a student achieves 200 points they receive a £10 voucher. In addition to this we also offer merits and the top three merit earners at the end of every term get to go out for a special lunch. This is very successful and if students work hard, they can earn £10 every two and a half weeks! We have also had rewards programmes that have included weekly prizes, amazon gifts and many more. We try to refresh the rewards programme frequently to keep everyone engaged.
